@DeeSadler’s Speaker Group Meetup

August 26th, 2010

Just a couple days ago, Dee Sadler held the first Speaker Group Meetup online over Adobe Connect. This is a great idea. Think Toastmasters or Ignite but geared towards conference / demo public speaking and online instead of actually going to a physical meeting place. Dee’s goal is to have multiple smaller talks, much like Ignite, to get practice for public speaking as well as hearing from veteran speakers. Check out the Speaker Group if you are looking to get some extra experience, hear some of the experts, learn some great knowledge about public speaking or even get your feet wet for the first time.

You can get the first meeting here.

Follow Dee on twitter to keep up with when and where the meetings will be.

Next online meet is on September 21st. Hope to see you there!

Bad Design: Disney Video Page

August 21st, 2010

Where’s the video?

Really? Why hide your content? And with such a small player?

This can be found here.

Flash Platform Logos

July 12th, 2010

It appears the new Flash Platform (AIR 2 and Flash Player, CS5 style) Logos are terribly hard to find in vector, so I made them.

You can grab them here in Illustrator format.

Enjoy and Happy Flashing!

Flash & Markup: There Is No War

June 11th, 2010
Preface: I have decided to use the term “Markup” to mean HTML5 and to continue to do so here on out. Markup referring to HTML, JavaScript, CSS, PHP and other elements used to create web and desktop applications, games and sites.  The term “HTML5″ is too much of a buzzword that seems to be misunderstood by many, including some of those in our communities. I also use the term “Flash” to refer to the entire Flash Platform including Flash Player and AIR.

For the past several months there has been much discussion and debate over web technologies. Some claim Markup is a “Flash Killer.” Some say that Flash shouldn’t be on the web any longer. While others say Flash isn’t going anywhere. At times it feels like an all out war.

Let me make one thing very clear: There is no war. (more…)

Giving Mad Props – #FATC

May 11th, 2010

Shortly after MAX in October last year, I was watching my twitter feed roll through when a tweet showed up that caught my eye. I don’t remember who said it, or what it was completely about, but I do remember that it was about a conference. Since I sat on the sidelines reading tweets about MAX, saddened that I wasn’t able to make it, my ears (er, eyes) perked up but there wasn’t much more said.

A short time later – maybe a day or two – another tweet appeared. In it the author mentioned the same conference but this time with a link. Upon clicking that link there appeared a humble little blue and gray site. Not much there, a Flash navigation, some mention of a conference and a lot of “coming soon” type text. “OK,” I thought to myself, “they must be just getting something small started.” (more…)

Export Multiple Movie Clips as SWCs

May 11th, 2010

Exporting movie clips from Flash’s library can be quite powerful. You can use each SWC as a component in another FLA much like loading an external SWF. But what if you have multiple MCs you need to export in the same FLA library and don’t want to go through the hassle of right clicking each one and selecting “Export as SWC?” That takes time. So instead grab this zip and follow these steps on exporting multiple movie clips as SWC.

And you should, too.

Flash Camp Seattle

April 21st, 2010

WOW. Flash Camp Seattle is less than 3 weeks away, and I totally forgot to blog about it.

And I’m speaking!

I am entirely honored to have my name in pixels in the same list as some really great guys, including Ryan Stewart, Duane Nickull, Nate Beck, David Kelly and others. (See the entire speakers list here.)

My session will focus on the process of enhancing the Designer to Developer workflow from Flash Pro to Flash Builder/Flex by creating reusable, easily skinable, custom built Flash components and extensions. Sounds long but creating one can take less than 10 minutes when everything is set up and rocking.

If you are in, around, near, or just want to come to Seattle, Flash Camp is on Friday, May 7, 2010. It’ll be an all day event filled with fun and learning and networking with some really awesome local people.

Hope to see you there!

#422 The Line in the Sand

The Line in the Sand is drawn. I’ll be on the fun side.

If you love Flash and are excited for the future of the platform, follow hash tag #422 on Twitter for all the fun, updates, and cool shit coming from people all around the globe within the next few days.

It’ll be exciting to say the least.

No Flash Packager for iPhone/iPad?

April 8th, 2010

Apple just had their iPhone OS 4 unveiling and there are some points to be taken out of it. Multitasking yada yada, Folders blah blah, iAd (bad idea, horrible presentation). But my most concern is stated in the TAC for iPhone 4.

See Line 195 and read the TAC yourself.

Not sure if Unity, Titanium, and many other 3rd party options will be rejected. But it does seem as though the Flash Packager will be hunted down.

Appcelerator guys have an initial response.

As I was writing this, Scott Janousek posted a blog entry that says my sentiments exactly.

Personally it feels like Apple’s grip on the entire iPad/iPhone environment is getting tighter by the day.

Maybe I won’t pay that $99 dev license fee.

I’ll be keeping my eyes out to see what happens.
