Why You Can’t Use Test Movie in Flash IDE for FP 10.1

June 30th, 2010

First of all, if you have not gotten ready for Flash Player 10.1 by integrating the playerglobal.swc into either Flash CS4 or CS5 you can read up on how to do that here.

Now, after many questions, I thought I would dive into why using Test Movie (cmd(cntrl)+enter) from Flash CS4 always gives “ReferenceError: Error #1065″ when trying to use a 10.1 specific function. This happens even after updating the Stand Alone players.

LVFUG + Litl

June 26th, 2010

This past week (6/19 – 6/24) I was on a much needed vacation in Las Vegas. Since the Las Vegas Flash User Group had rescheduled their June meet-up to be within the time I was visiting, I decided to tag along with still recently appointed Adobe Platform Evangelist, Renaun Erickson, who was giving a presentation.

Flash & Markup: There Is No War

June 11th, 2010
Preface: I have decided to use the term “Markup” to mean HTML5 and to continue to do so here on out. Markup referring to HTML, JavaScript, CSS, PHP and other elements used to create web and desktop applications, games and sites.  The term “HTML5″ is too much of a buzzword that seems to be misunderstood by many, including some of those in our communities. I also use the term “Flash” to refer to the entire Flash Platform including Flash Player and AIR.

For the past several months there has been much discussion and debate over web technologies. Some claim Markup is a “Flash Killer.” Some say that Flash shouldn’t be on the web any longer. While others say Flash isn’t going anywhere. At times it feels like an all out war.

Let me make one thing very clear: There is no war. Continue reading »

AIR, Flash and Android: The Freedom of Choice. Reclaimed.

June 9th, 2010

The Freedom of Choice. Reclaimed.

There’s more than one smart phone on the market. And these others will soon bring the full internet to your hand. Why wait to get a device that only shows a portion of the web? Why not go get one that will let you browse the entire web?

A Response: The Flash Platform

I decided to make a response to a recent set of “demos” of HTML5 but for The Flash Platform.

4 Ways to Improve TweetDeck’s Tweets – Design

May 21st, 2010

Yesterday TweetDeck updated to v0.34.1 with several nice, new features included. Among my favorite new features are: Scheduled Tweets, Translate This Tweet, and Recording Video from Webcam.

Yet, even with a bunch of new buttons to push (some old ones have been moved around, and to my dismay) there doesn’t seem to be much improved in the most important part of TweetDeck: The Tweet itself. Continue reading »

Giving Mad Props – #FATC

May 11th, 2010

Shortly after MAX in October last year, I was watching my twitter feed roll through when a tweet showed up that caught my eye. I don’t remember who said it, or what it was completely about, but I do remember that it was about a conference. Since I sat on the sidelines reading tweets about MAX, saddened that I wasn’t able to make it, my ears (er, eyes) perked up but there wasn’t much more said.

A short time later – maybe a day or two – another tweet appeared. In it the author mentioned the same conference but this time with a link. Upon clicking that link there appeared a humble little blue and gray site. Not much there, a Flash navigation, some mention of a conference and a lot of “coming soon” type text. “OK,” I thought to myself, “they must be just getting something small started.” Continue reading »

Export Multiple Movie Clips as SWCs

May 11th, 2010

Exporting movie clips from Flash’s library can be quite powerful. You can use each SWC as a component in another FLA much like loading an external SWF. But what if you have multiple MCs you need to export in the same FLA library and don’t want to go through the hassle of right clicking each one and selecting “Export as SWC?” That takes time. So instead grab this zip and follow these steps on exporting multiple movie clips as SWC.

Geeky Conversation with a Non-Geek

April 30th, 2010

While having sushi tonight, I had an amazing conversation with a Non-Geek. We talked about everything from the iPad to Google’s Tablet to User Experiences on desktop and devices and more. She probably has a lot better insight from a non-geek point of view on much of this than I do.

You can hear the recorded conversation here: 20100429.mp3

I started recording in the middle of our conversation so the first part may not make too much sense. She was in the middle of explaining her thoughts on the difference between Google’s approach vs. Apple’s.

Note: She has only played with an iPad once (yesterday) and wanted one, and I had only showed her information on the Google Tablet earlier in the conversation.

Sound quality isn’t the best. We were in a restaurant and recorded on my BlackBerry Storm.
